Frustrations

by Catherine Elms

/

about

'Frustrations' is my first studio-recorded track, recorded at The Nest Studios with dark orchestral band Birdeatsbaby, with drums by Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls. I hope you love it as much as I do!

This song is about seeing a world of injustice and inequality, and vents against those with the power to make change who refuse to do so. She calls for us to resist the urge to give up or turn our anger inwards, and instead work together to build a better world. We keep fighting but nothing changes until those in power join us in the fight. This song is a call to arms–come join us: together, we could be a revelation.

lyrics

The frustrations of neutrality
Haunt me daily and oh, especially nightly
Your measured responses are misplaced
Oh, and your favourite line: “It is what it is”

Isn’t it good enough to ask what’s right?
Softly enough that no one could object?
I withdraw again in my shameful earnestness
Wiping my heart dripping on my sleeve

How long will you try to tell yourself that justice is an acquisition?
I would gladly trade my accolades if it would mean a revelation

Walls can be torn down by furious hands
If we’re unafraid of blood and dirt, otherwise
We infinitely replicate, brick by brick
In this wasteland you call history

How long will you try to tell yourself that justice is an acquisition?
I would gladly trade my accolades if we could be a revelation
Let’s pretend we’re not what we’ve been through
Or hold ourselves too tightly to attack
god the things I’ve turned myself into
Watch me turn back
Watch me turn back

When I tire of this fight, that could be the rest of our lives,
Who would blame me if I fall?
When I tire of this fight, that’s just when I decide to rise

How long will you try to tell yourself that justice is an acquisition?
I would gladly trade my accolades if we could be a revelation
Let’s pretend we’re not what we’ve been through
Or hold ourselves too tightly to attack
Oh god the things I’ve turned myself into
Watch me turn back
Watch me turn back
