Monday Eyes

about

ABOUT
I wrote it during a bit of a quarter-life crisis, when trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life. Like many of us, I had always believed that if I just worked hard enough and proved myself worthy through collecting achievements, everything would fall into place, and success would find me. I realised that this is untrue. I found myself in a job that dampened my spirit, feeling like an awkward impostor, longing for something more, and mourning the future I’d envisaged for myself that never came. This song is for anyone who’s experienced that feeling of getting to your twenties and entering the ‘real world,’ thinking: “is this it?” This song is for anyone who wishes they were doing something more profound with their 9-to-5 - may we persevere, bravely and with longing.

lyrics

Monday eyes - dreaming of much brighter skies
I’m 29 and feeling old
Another year - as hard as every cold grey morning
I was told these streets would be paved with gold

I’m a smart girl, and I haven’t stopped in my whole life
There’s a thousand paths to the success that I crave
I could catch my breath, I’d finally be happy
And I’d know how to be brave.

Monday eyes - resist the urge to speak in sighs
I’ve forgotten how not to be a black not
I’m sat inside the shadow of a great fig tree
It frightens me, watching each one fall and rot

They say if it’s meant to be
then you’ll know it, then you’ll know
But I don’t know anything anymore
So show me, where should I go?

The seasons change, but each feels darker than the last
I turn away, I can’t be weak
I dry my eyes, put another pair of painful shoes on
And I walk, and with every step I long for sleep.
With every step I long for sleep
With every step I long for sleep
With every step I long for sleep.
